Keyboard shortcuts and skip links

Everything in the widget works from the keyboard. The first Tab on any page shows skip links, and a handful of standard keys do the rest.

The keys

Keys the widget responds to
KeysWhat they do
TabShow the skip linksThe first Tab on a page lands on the skip links, which sit before everything else. The launcher button comes after your page content.
ShiftTabMove backGoes to the previous skip link or control.
EnterorSpaceJump or openFollows a skip link, opens the panel from the launcher or the Open Accessora link, and switches a control inside the panel.
EscCloseCloses the panel. When the skip links are showing, hides them.

These are the keys browsers already use for links and buttons. The widget has no shortcuts of its own today, such as a key combination that opens the panel or changes text size. So visitors don’t have to learn anything new, and the widget doesn’t take over any key combination your site or a screen reader might use.

When the widget loads, it looks for your page’s main landmarks and adds a skip link for each one it finds: menu, header, main content and footer. They sit at the very start of the page and stay hidden until someone presses Tab, so they don’t change your design.

The skip links appear on the first Tab and hide again when focus leaves them. Which ones show depends on the landmarks your page has.

The last link, Open Accessora, opens the panel straight away. It is also the way in when you’ve hidden the floating launcher.

To get the most useful skip links, mark up your page with landmarks: <nav>, <main>, <header> and <footer>, or the matching ARIA roles. On Enterprise, automated fixes add missing landmarks for you.

Inside the panel

  • Tab and Shift + Tab move between the profiles, adjustments and buttons.
  • Enter or Space switches the focused tile on or off, or presses a button such as plus and minus on Font Size.
  • Esc closes the panel from anywhere on the page.

The panel and launcher are real buttons and controls, so screen readers announce them by name.

Testing your own site

Load your site, click in the address bar, then press Tab. The first stop should be the skip links. If your site has its own skip link, it comes right after them.
